The culmination of a poverty of vision. Forty years of Conservative politicians pointing the finger at Europe for all UK ills. A Conservative Prime Minister forced to capitulate to his party’s right wing and call a referendum. A Labour leader both supporting his party’s line to remain and clearly wishing to leave.
A failure of political leadership. A failure just of leadership itself.
The consequences a new Scottish Independence referendum and a renewed energy for right wing parties across Europe.
When the dust settles and it becomes clear that this was a vote led by fear, not ‘Project Fear’ – even though this was a miserable form of campaigning, but the fear of voters hurt by austerity, uncertain of an upturn in Europeans living alongside them and no clear voice to help offer a positive vision of the UK in both Europe and the world, leaders in politics, economics, society and media must take the blame.
And we must take the blame for allowing this leadership to have come to power.
